No Nothingness Here

You know how some weekends pass by in a blur of nothingness? When nothing stands out and nothing interesting happens? This weekend was not one of those. While some of what happened will never be divulged*, some is innocuous enough to tell you about.

Friday night.

It was a simple plan: I'd go to the quiet dive bar up the street, get a pint, and read for an hour or so after dinner. But my simple went awry, and the next thing I know I'm having pints with an old codger named Carlos and his sidekick Austin.

I wouldn't change a minute of the evening, especially when they started telling me dirty jokes in between discussing how they were going to duel each other for my hand. My favorite moment was when Austin leaned toward me and said, "Last week some guy stole Carlos's supply of Viagra. The police believe a hardened criminal took it."

Saturday.

A couple months ago, my friend Dawn emailed me to ask me to go with her to an all-day workshop. I said sure. Then I thought to ask what the workshop was about. Past life regression, of course**.

No, I didn't regress into seeing a past life, but I did have an amazing day of meditation. But the most interesting part was when we exchanged personal items with a stranger and related the images that came to mind as we meditated. The woman I switched with told me she kept hearing the word "backrat" in her head. I'm taking that to mean I need to go to Monaco to play baccarat, à la James Bond.

Sunday.

There's something I've always wanted to do: order a breve. "What is that?" you ask. It's heaven in a cup, my friends: a cappucino made with cream. When I ordered it, the barista nearly swooned with excitement, and I swooned as I drank it. Of course, afterward I immediately went for a short hike to get my blood pumping, to hopefully keep it from plaquing in my arteries. Would I order it again? Hell yeah.

Really, Kate?

I can hear you thinking WTF, Kate? You call this a weekend of no nothingness? Because it seems pretty routine***.

It wasn't routine. In fact, the weekend was completely lovely, down to the silly movie I watched Sunday night while having a picnic on the living room floor ("Get Him the the Greek" in case you're curious). It's the simple pleasures, you know? If you can't appreciate the less significant things, the bigger things don't matter as much when they happen. In the scheme of everything, it's the little moments that stand out—like sharing a strawberry cheesecake cupcake with a friend, which I also did this weekend.

Did you do something last weekend that delighted you? Or maybe you're planning on doing something today. Do tell. Please. Because this week we're going to be all about sharing in the joy****. That's how we roll here.

* Sorry. But really you'd thank me if you knew what I was sparing you.

** "Of course" because my friend Dawn is into woo-hoo shit. She's the one who contacted a pet psychic when her cat was sick, remember

*** I'm always hanging out at the past life regression seminars, after all.

**** No, I didn't hit my head at the past life thing, or in kung fu. I just feel buoyant and happy and want to be appreciative of everything around me. Is that so wrong?*****

***** Also, I realize I've been doing a lot of footnotes. Don't worry, peeps—next week's blog will be footnote-free. I hope.

  • Hear hear! The simple things are the most important things!

Most of my weekend was a continued rotation between procrastinating, working, and running errands (with emphasis on procrastination/NCIS season 2). Tentative plans with a guy friend didn't work out. However, I did have a lovely brunch out with my Evolution-class girls on Sunday. Not high-quality food, but definitely high-quality company :)

Today remains a mystery. Tuesdays are my heaviest day for lectures, and I have an assignment that I must finish before tomorrow. However, if I make enough progress with that (and my throat finishes recovering from this endless cold), I may drag a friend or two to karaoke ;) Because I haven't had a fix in far too long.

  • Could you hear me groaning over, "Last week some guy stole Carlos's supply of Viagra. The police believe a hardened criminal took it."?

I love, love, love October. My favorite month of the year hands down. Just yesterday, after listening to people mutter about the "lousy" weather, I went for the nicest run. I love to run in the rain, esp. in the fall. You're right, it's the simple things that make us happiest.

  • JB - I can agree on running. Not so much on running in the rain. Definitely on jumping in puddles in the rain. ;P The cuter the rain boots, the better.

  • I love mysteries, Karen! It means anything is possible. :) And cute rain boots are a must, although I do love it when the rain is warm enough that you can tromp around in flip-flops.

Running (or walking) in the rain is one of my favorite things too, JB. Also, I have to admit, I wrote that particular joke knowing how much you'd appreciate it. ;)

Because we're celebrating joys this week... A simple pleasure I've rediscovered: candles. I'd forgotten how happy candlelight made me feel.

  • You make Breve sound so delicious. And yet I know if I order it, I'm gonna hate it.

Let's see. 70% of my weekend consisted of watching LOTS of movies. At home. And I also played around on a hoop suspended from the ceiling and on a flying trapeze. I may have flirted. I don't know. I don't know when I flirt.
Also, I REALLY need cute rain boots. or ANY rain boots. I also discovered that my top wardrobe consists of 99% tank tops and 1% long sleeves.

  • Apparently there is a great need for rain boots going around...quick stock up before the shortage hits!

Mmmm...candles. Personally I lean toward baking scents: vanilla, clove, buttercream, sugar cookie, pumpkin pie, cinnamon.

  • P: Oddly, I don't know when I flirt either, AND my wardrobe consists of 99% tank tops and 1% long sleeves too. Except in SF I'm mostly okay with that ratio.

JB: I even like plain candles for their virgin wax smell.

  • Hmmm next time you come in better order a breve...it's somehow the barista's dream drink to make :)

  • Who knew? The barista who made it for me was rhapsodizing to my friends about how exciting it was. :) It's totally my beverage now, Diana.
