Portland, Oregon

Continuing my gypsy lifestyle, I'm in Portland for a few weeks.  What am I doing here?  So far, work.  I'd be mildly disgruntled but I like the projects I'm doing, so I'm actually happy hacking away at them, even though I'm putting in long hours.  Never fear—I have fun and frivolity scheduled as well.

All that amounts to one thing: I haven't done anything interesting to blog about.  Unless you count the episode on the airplane with little boy who jumped into my lap.

Fortunately, I realized this early enough in the day to brainstorm ways of spicing up my life for you guys.  What did I come up with?  Donuts, of course.

So I embarked on a perilous mission this afternoon, braving bus and train and strange Oregonians with lisps, to go downtown to The Realm of the Donut, known in Portland as Voodoo Doughnuts and Wedding Chapel.

A couple observations about the donut shop:

  1. The line was long.  What are people doing getting donuts at 4pm?  Don't they have jobs?
  2. Buying donuts at 2am is much more satisfying than at 4pm anyway.  Especially after you've been butchering songs at the karaoke place around the corner.
  3. You should go in knowing what you want, because the sugar fumes will mess with you and make you think you really do need a bacon maple bar in addition to a Portland cream and one smothered with Coco Puffs.
  4. Milk is essential.
  5. If you need to walk off the subsequent sugar rush, the waterfront is right there and a lovely option.  Also, there's Kell's—arguably one of the best Irish pubs in the states.  A Guinness will always set you right.

No, I didn't buy more than one donut, and I only ate half of that.  I'm losing it in my old age.

  • But what KIND of donut did you buy?

Hopefully one of those neon colored ones that look like they escaped from the 80s.

  • Or a Peeps factory. They definitely could be Peeps rejects...

  • I just wish I was also in Portland. But I would be checking out the famous rose garden there. This is definitely on my 'travel list' and boo hoo that you are having all the fun and I am sure gathering good material. By the way, I bought the last copy of Chosen By Desire here at Barnes and N...have a great visit

  • I almost forgot today was blog day (because I've been working for thirteen hours.. and still going, actually). I want a voodoo donut. I miss voodoo. and powell's. and kell's. and also the boiler room.

I never did understand the obsession with the rose garden--but that's not my thing I guess. I look at it and I see a bunch of roses. Just like I look at pioneer square and see a bunch of bricks. I don't get the big deal. Powell's on the other hand. That's something to see. But I love books. I'm delirious from too much work. I'm going to finish my work now.

  • Do... Do they have peanut butter inclusive donuts? I don't have much of a sweet tooth generally, but peanut butter is a big weakness of mine... Especially REAL peanut butter. Not just the 'smooth' stuff with peanut chunks in it, but the stuff that has ONLY peanuts in it. 100% mushy peanut goodness....

  • Jen, I bought a Portland cream. I only ate half of it, it was so sweet. I need to go back and get a maple bacon bar (I kid you not--those suckers are good). Maybe I'll get a radioactive Peeps donut too, in your honor. I'll send you a picture. ;)

  • Elaine, don't listen to my (cynical) sister. The rose garden is pretty. I'd come to Portland for Powell's though. It's book Valhalla. Multnomah Falls is one of my favorite places too, if you want to go the nature route.

  • Karen, they have every kind of donut known to mankind. If you like cereals like Fruit Loops, Lucky Charms, or Rice Krispies, you'll especially be in heaven.

I think I saw a peanut butter donut on the menu. I'll look more closely next time.

  • Kate, if you do find it, please don't tell me... It'll just make it worse to know that something so wonderful exists so far out of my reach... (I highly doubt that a donut would be in any edible state by the time it shipped from Portland to Southern Ontario)

  • That sounds like a challenge. ;)
